Select the Perfect Foundation

There are many different brands of foundation on the market. Each major cosmetic company has different types, from tinted moisturisers to heavier crème bases. Different foundations give you different results. Here is a list of what these products can do for you.

Luminizing Foundation
Is a sheer foundation with a slight amount of shimmer already mixed into the product, usually for a dewy finish. Great for dry skin types, can look a little oily on oily skin types.

Primers
Are Moisturisers with a little shimmery pigment in them, the shimmer illuminates your skin and the moisturiser prepares it, ready for your foundation.

Tinted Moisturiser
Have a small amount of foundation pigment in them, they are recommended to use if you want a light sheer cover, or if your skin is even-toned, and you don’t need a heavy pigmented foundation.

Liquid Foundations
Can be water or oil based, they are light and creamy in texture and provide a light to medium coverage. Use a damp sponge or foundation brush for an even application.

Cream Foundations
Cream foundations are almost always oil-based. They provide a medium to full coverage, that can cover the discolouration of most blemishes, and some pigmentation problems of the skin. If you do suffer form breakouts, using a product like this can make it worse as your skin doesn’t get a chance to breathe, and is not able to clear itself up. Suits drier or uneven skin types, if your using a powder to set foundation, watch the creasing under the eyes (too much powder shows up in any fine lines.

Powder Compacts
Consist of very fine milled powder, pressed into a compact; it can be used wet or dry. They provide a medium coverage and can be applied with a sponge or a large powder brush. It can sometimes be too drying and emphasize wrinkles, especially around the eyes.

Loose Powder
Is usually packaged in a jar or tub and is designed to set your foundation base, it has a light airy feel and should be applied with a powder puff. To set your foundation with more staying power or use a large powder brush to matte down the foundation for a more natural lighter application.

Wet and Dry Compacts
Are similar to powder compacts and they are designed to be applied with a damp sponge for a lighter coverage that dries to a powder finish.

Bronzing Foundations
Come in shimmery or matte shades so depends if you want to look shimmery and bronzed or you just want to darken your skintone so you don’t look too washed out especially in winter. For summer nights a bit of shimmer looks fabulous.

Foundation Test

Choose foundation in this order:
  1. Coverage - Pigment will it cover what you need. Do you want a full or sheer coverage?
  2. Texture - Oil or water-based, will it cover what you want? Do you have oily or dry, combinaton or sensitive skin?
  3. Colour – Do you have cool or warm undertone to your skin? What suits you best?

To test:
Coverage – Back of hand.
Texture – Back of hand.
Colour – Side of cheek onto jawline.

Check out how it looks like in daylight.

Foundation Tips

Compare the colour of the foundation by putting a small amount on the back of your hand. A cool base will have a pink undertone whereas a warm base will have a yellowish undertone. These tones are easy to pick when you hold a pink base and a yellow base foundation side by side.

Never match foundation colour to your hand colour

Try it on your hand first to check the tone and texture. If you think it is too sheer for your skin, try a foundation that has more pigment in it. The more pigment in the product, the more it will cover.

If you only want to slightly even out your skintone or only want a light cover then a water-based, sheer foundation is all you may need.

Once a foundation base is chosen you can apply it to your jawline and cheek area to check that the colour is right for you. To make sure you have chosen the right colour, check in daylight, to make totally sure it matches your skin tone perfectly.

Whether you want sheer or a more heavily pigmented coverage, moisture or a dryer base, the colour should always blend into your complexion. Check in natural light to make sure it matches perfectly to your skin tone.

You should not be able to see the actual colour or product on your skin.

Tools to apply your Foundation Tips

Use a dampened sponge or foundation brush or with clean washed hands you can use fingers on your own face.

A sponge or brush helps to blend in the colour evenly into the skin and all over the face. Latex-free sponges are generally the best to use as they are the softest. Some cheaper sponges are dry and rubbery which can drag on the skin when applying your foundation. If you have dry skin to start with, you could pull particles of skin off, leaving them sitting on your foundation resulting in rough and patchy skin.

When working on yourself you can use your cleaned fingers to blend in.

If your chosen foundation is a water or gel based product you will need to work quickly so the product doesn’t dry before you have finished applying it.

When using sponges to apply foundation, it is a great idea to invest in decent sponges, silk latex free sponges are great and if you wet them before use, squeezing out all the excess water into paper towel, leaving it damp your foundation will glide on smoothly. Even using an oil based foundation works well with a damp sponge blending and gliding the product over your face.

Step-by-step application Tips

  1. Wash hands.
  2. Clean hair from face.
  3. Apply foundation to face starting on forehead, working down the face and blend onto the neck so your face is not one colour and your neck another.
  4. Create a sheer or full coverage depending on your need, for going out at night you may want a bit more coverage.
  5. Apply concealer wherever needed, on blemishes or under eyes, sides of nose under chin, any recessed or darker area.
If you use a heavier-pigmented product like a pan-stick you can generally use this same product as concealer, but when using a sheer foundation it is best to apply concealer 1 – 2 shades lighter than the foundation blending the edges of concealer so they disappear into your foundation.
